I developed a love for espresso after frequenting a local coffee house while in college. I’d go on to run their social media and work behind the counter. This is beyond the point though. Espresso was something I’d come to enjoy greatly. Yet I couldn’t be dragging around, much less afford, a professional full size espresso machine while I was out exploring or travelling due to being on active duty. So this is the set up I have settled on:
Java Press Grinder:
I use this grinder because it works well for both espresso and pour overs when I’m in the mood. Being a manual grinder, it takes longer to use than an electronic one, yet it removes the worry of keeping batteries on hand as well as the worry of it breaking if it gets wet on a hike or camping trip. And it doesn’t take up much real estate in your bag!

Wacaco Espresso Maker:
I got one of these when I was working on test sites during covid and still have one to this day. There’s another model that takes nespresso pods, if that’s more your speed! The same company even makes a similar “open-basket” model that’s pretty cool, as well. Similar to the grinder, it’s great for travelling as it’s pretty compact. While you’ll never get full blown espresso out of a manual espresso maker, the wocaco produces coffee as close to it as you can get without a machine! I’d even go so far as to say it makes better espresso than the cheap machines you can get at the local walmart, wherever you are going.

This combo is pretty cool for when you’re on the move and after your caffeine fix. The only downside is the time it takes to get setup, brew, tear down and clean. If you’d like to see my pour over set up that I take on the road, consider subscribing! Thanks for reading!
